The /bin directory contains executables for Silicon Graphics compiled
under IRIX 5.X. These have the extension .sgi.

Executables for IRIX 4.0.1 are also included for scanps, sortsco, select
and oc. The distribution may also contain executables for id_pir and simclean.
If not, you can get a pre-indexed copy of the PIR database from the
ftp server.

The Sun executables were compiled under SunOS 4.1.3 and have the extension
.sun.

You should create links to the appropriate executables from a directory
on your path. e.g. /usr/local/bin.

----------------------

The data directory contains the "scanps.def" file a comparison matrix (md.mat)
and a matrix of parameters for the length-dependent significance scoring
scheme.

You MUST edit the scanps.def file to point to the location of files on your
installation. See the manual for full details.

The data directory also contains a small protein sequence database with
indexes. This is for you to test scanps with.

----------------------

The doc directory contains PostScript and HTML versions of the manual
and the example files.
----------------------

In order to run scanps you must set up some environment variables to point at
the scanps.def file, the database files and some limits. A sample
set of environment variables is shown in the file
"scanps.environment". You should modify this to fit your local installation.
